Printing a job first requires converting it to “plates”. In order to get that, two techniques are used:
Computer to plate (CTP) is an imaging technology used in modern printing processes. With this technology, an image created in a Desktop Publishing (DTP) application is output directly to a printing plate. The type of plates we use are Thermal Plates. Those kinds of plates have a photosensitivity between 830 nm and 1.070 nm and have a dot reproduction that goes from 1 to 99%.
Computer to Film (CTF) is a print workflow involving the printing from a computer, straight to film. This film is then burned onto a lithographic plate, using a plate burner. Images from the films are transferred to printing plates in much the same way as photographs are developed. A measured amount of light is allowed to pass through the film to expose the printing plate. When the plates are exposed to light, a chemical reaction occurs that allows an ink-receptive coating to be activated. This results in the transfer of the image from the film to the plate. The plate is then put on an offset printing press to make a product. This process requires a clean environment, skilled workers, and a well thought out proofing system/workflow to maximize quality.
Getting the colors you want at the end is all based on a series of actions, and different color plates. Four colors are used to provide you the required finished product: Black, Cyan (blue), Magenta (red), and Yellow; each of them has a separate plate. This can be referred to as the four-color printing process, similar to the three-color process used in television. Scanners, digital cameras and computer monitors use red, green and blue (RGB) light to display color. Commercial printing presses print with Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (CMYK) ink – called process printing – instead of RGB light, and therefore produce a different range of color.
This type of color separation, mixing three or four colors to produce an infinite variety of colors, is called process color separation. Another type of color separation, called spot color separation, is used to separate colors that are not to be mixed. In this case, each spot color is represented by its own ink, which is specially mixed. Spot colors are effective for highlighting text but they cannot be used to reproduce full-color images.
